Profile Directory Locations and Files
General Advice: The easiest way to access your profile on Windows is to use the environment variable %appdata%. This works on all versions of Windows.Start | Run | %appdata% [hit enter]
Windows XP:

In Windows Vista, click on the Start button and type %appdata% in the Start Search box:
a folder named "Roaming"
will be displayed. Click on the
folder to access the folder.

Vista uses a folder structure different from previous Windows versions.
All personal files andfolders can be found in C:\Users (replace C:\
with the drive Windows is installed on). Documents and Settings (used by
previous Windows versions) still exists but only points to C:\Users. |

Main /Mozilla/ folder:
| pluginreg.dat | Plugin database. Installed plugins on your system. |
| registry.dat | keeps the info where your profile(s) are stored. If this file is missing, Mozilla will not be able to find your configured profiles. |

| 12345678.s | Password-Database | Saves all your passwords for Wb/FTP/Email/News. You can easily copy this file from system to system to reuse it. Just alter the prefs.js and change the settings so that the path points to this file. You can delete this file to get rid of all saved passwords. |

| bookmarks.html | Bookmarks | Contains all your bookmarks. This file can be used in Netscape 4 as well. Just copy the file to your Netscape 4 profile and rename it to "bookmark.htm". |
| cert7.db /cert8.db | certificates database | client certificates database. If you have problems with certificates, delete those files. See also key4.db and secmod.db. |
| cookies.txt | Cookies database | Contains all your stored cookies. You can delete this file when you encounter problems with cookies and the UI-option doesn't work right. |
| custom.dic | Custom dictionary | Words you add to the dictionary are saved in this file. |
| default-connections.rdf | AIM/ICQ settings | settings for ICQ/AIM integration |
| default-invite.rdf | AIM/ICQ settings | Buddy list for AIM/ICQ |
| default-messages.rdf | settings for AIM | default replies for AIM |
| default-messages-icq.rdf | settings for ICQ | default replies for ICQ |
| downloads.rdf | Downloadmanager database | Contains a list of all downloaded files. Delete this file to get rid of this list. |
| history.dat | History database | Contains a database of all visited web pages. You can delete the content via UI, but sometimes it's easier to delete this file. |
| history.mab | Temporary address book | Collected addresses address book. Yu can delete this file to get rid of all the entries in "Collected" Addresses". |
| key3.db | Security key database | key database for certificates. If you have problems with certificates delete this file. It will be recreated with default settings. Existing certificates will be deleted though and have to be reinstalled. |
| localstore.rdf | Saves windows positions | Saves userdefined windows positions. Can be deleted if you have problems with Mozilla windows. |
| mailViews.dat | Mail and News Views | Saves how the Mail and News items are displayed. |
| mimeTypes.rdf | MIME Types Helpers | Defines helper applications for MIME-types. See preferences -> Navigator -> helper... |
| panacea.dat | Mail folder cache | Cache for the mail folder database, layout. |
| panels.rdf | Sidebar panels | Installed panels in the sidebar. To get rid of installed sidebar panels, remove this file, it will be recreated with its default settings. |
| parent.lock (Linux: .parentlock) | Lock-file | Created when a profile is in use, so that it can not be started twice. |
| prefs.js | configuration file | All configurations such as Mailnews accounts, paths and so forth go into this file. |
| prefs.bak | Backup-file | Backup of prefs.js. |
| search.rdf | Search engine file | Saves installed/used custom search engines in the sidebar. Can be deleted to get rid of any customization. |
| secmod.db | Security module database | security modules database. Delete if you have problems with your security certifcates. |
| training.dat | Training file | Training-file for the Bayesian Filter. |
| URL.tbl | forms data exclusion file | Saves websites you don't want to have forms data saved. |
| user.js | user configuration file | central configuration file for user customizations. |
| XUL.mfl (Linux: XUL.mfasl) | XUL Cache | XUL fastload file. Caches the user interface for faster loading. |
| *.ics | Calendar files | Saves entries for the calendar. |
| /Cache | Cache-folders | Visited pages are saved there. |
| /NewCache | Cache folders for Netscape 6.x | Visited pages. |
| /chrome | interface customizations | Contains: *.jar: Installed themes userChrome.css: interface customizations userContent.css: content customizations chrome.rdf: Saves Mozilla Layout (used Themes) |

POP3-accounts.. %POP3-SERVER-NAME%-Unterordner: GSaved data for your mail accounts. *.msf: Index files. Saves status of your emails. These files are known to get corrupted, so delete them if you have problems with Mail. files without extension: contains your mails in the Unix mbox format. rules.dat: mail filters. popstate.dat: POP3 status file. |
